Ten Things To Do Within 1 Hours Drive of Brisbane
  1. Bask in the sun next to the artificial beach at Southbank Parklands, which has a stunning view of the river and the city. Stroll through the Parklands or visit the nearby Cultural Centre and look at an art gallery or take in an exhibition. There are picnic and barbeque facilities in the park too.
  2. For a relaxing morning take a free guided tour and then relax a while in the Botanical Gardens. These are Queenslands premier subtropical gardens, and offer a tranquil respite from the busy city close by. They are bordered by the river on one side and Parliament House on the other.
  3. Queensland's most famous lookout, Mt. Cootha, has amazing panoramic views of the city, letting you see as far off as the islands in Moreton Bay. Enjoy the view along with some fine food and drink at the restaurant on the summit - its especially popular at sunset when the lights start to come on below and contrast with the orange of the setting sun.
  4. Take the short ferry trip to Stradbroke Island for some of the most captivating beaches in the state. Hiking trails and 4WD tracks allow the more adventurous to explore the islands interior, and there are some beautiful inland lakes that make for great swimming. Fishing at Amity Point is popular pastime as well, and the bowls club there is always well attended.
  5. A short drive out of town are the famous and fun amusement parks, Dreamworld, Movieworld and Wet n' Wild. Each one will provide you and the family with a solid day of fun. They are perfect for the young and the young at heart, with thrills and spills aplenty. Dont try and include two into one day, you need at least a day to appreciate each park fully.
  6. The Story Bridge adventure climb will give you a birds eye view of the city along with some interesting commentary about Brissie's history and heritage. Catch a dawn or twilight climb for a very special experience, and top it off with a drink at the Story Bridge hotel. Its our answer to the Harbour Bridge climb in Sydney, and you'll agree its a pretty good answer!
  7. Head north and drive through the Glass House Mountains to experience the rugged natural beauty of the volcanic peaks and sprawling pine plantations that are typical of this National Park. Breathtaking views will greet you around each corner, and after the drive you can pull in at the beaches of the Sunshine Coast. Noosa is a favourite spot there, as is Maroochydore and Mooloolaba.
  8. Australia Zoo in Beerwah is a tribute to the life work of the late Steve Irwin, and is a fun way to get in touch with nature. Kids and adults will love the croc shows, and can spend the rest of the day taking in the other Australian and Asian wildlife on display. Steves father started the zoo and then he made it famous, and it is now an Australian icon that is a must-see for tourists.
  9. An hour's drive south is the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast. High rise buildings in a beach setting are characteristic of this tourist hot spot which is a must see for anyone in the area keen on shopping, surfing or just taking it easy for a while. The coastline consists of beautiful beaches and the hinterland has lush green rainforests. Favourite spots are Burleigh Heads, Surfers Paradise and Tambourine Mountain.
  10. Queen Street Mall is in the CBD and is the ultimate stop for shopaholics. Stroll down this open air mall and visit all the large name outlets, or have a meal and a drink in one of the many pubs and restaurants. There are always buskers and street performers to entertain you, and there are movie houses showing the latest releases for when the shopping gets too much!
